INTRODUCTION

The International Astronautical Congress (IAC) was hosted in 2016 by the Mexican Space Agency and the International Astronautical Federation in Mexico. This Congress was attended by scientists, researchers and space agencies from all over the world. Delegates gathered with international organizations to discuss new research, discoveries and technologies that explore the possibilities that space offers to assure the future of humanity.

WHAT IS IAC?

The International Astronautical Congress (IAC) is the one time of the year when members from all sectors of  the space industry come together. Global and multidisciplinary, the IAC covers all topics across the sector helping to showcase the latest developments in astronautical science. Above all,  the Congress provides opportunities for contacts and potential partnerships. Each year the IAC changes country, theme and local organiser, enabling more regions and people to be a part of the world space scene.

CHALLENGES

BTC was tasked with the following goals for the International Astronautical Congress (IAC):

  • promote the relatively new Mexican Space Agency and make it relevant in the sector

  • use the conference as an opportunity to consolidate industry alliances and investment

  • increase the country's competitiveness in the sector

  • make it affordable for all countries to make it inclusive

  • attract funding for the congress

BTC’S SOLUTIONS

1. Media & PR

BTC developed a robust media and public relations strategy based on the presence of the Mexican Space Agency as a strategic ally of international organisations and forums which served to strengthen the Agency's relevance and  which generated partnerships and the willing participation of influential industry players.

2. Promotion & Sales

A promotion and sales plan was also implemented, in alliance with key stakeholders (primarily the local and federal governments in the country), to engage important supporters from the private and public sector.

3. One-on-one Networking

Finally, the implementation of a platform for one-on-one business meetings managed to attract the participation of key industry participants who saw value in attending and networking at the Congress.
