INTRODUCTION

With the Matera European Capital of Culture 2019 scheduled for the 19th of January 2019 with no set location, Ega Worldwide Congresses & Events had only 123 days to build the venue that would host the Opening Ceremony for thousands of delegates and guests. With delays due to unforseen circumstances such as unusal snowfalls in the south of Italy, Ega was faced with a challenging task for a major high profile event.

WHAT IS CAVA DEL SOLE?

Matera is best known for its extensive cave-dwelling districts, it is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. The city provides a stunning backdrop of stairways and narrow lanes, cave-houses carved out of rock. Matera leaves a special place in your heart as it was built with the chisel by subtraction instead of addition. Here the Italian creative genius dominates and has shaped a landscape that is influenced by art and poetry.

The Cava del Sol (Quarry of the Sun) has been given a new function and is a perfect place to host events and artistic performances in an extraordinary setting. Between 2019 - 2022 Matera expects 44 million visitors, 500 events and 200 hours of live TV, radio and streaming.

CHALLENGE

The challenge was Time, Time, Time… Ega, together with a team of architects, engineers, security and location managers worked almost 24 hours a day to make it all possible. With great commitment together from all teams the venue was ready for the opening ceremony of the event.

OUTCOME

Within a few short months a new Multi-functional Conference Centre was built in an abandoned cave in Matera, creating a beautiful and modern location for indoor events and a new stage for outdoor concerts. Matera at last had a location for all the events of the Matera European Capital of Culture 2019!

The new venue "La Cava del Sole", whilst built for the events of Matera European Capital of Culture 2019, is a legacy of the event for the territory of Matera and the whole Basilicata region: a multi purpose center that can host 1,000 delegates, an outdoor arena with the possibility to host up to 7,000 people and a sustainable service village with a restaurant, shops and facilities.

La Cava del Sole” will be managed by a temporary grouping of companies until 2022.
